About Tamarisk

Tamarisk was started in 2008 by a group of parents looking after toddlers. We began meeting at Winshill Children’s Centre and rehearsing songs while our children played.

After our first tentative performance upstairs in a local café we went on to perform in Derby Cathedral, Calke Abbey, Sudbury Hall and The National Memorial Arboretum.

We have collaborated with local storytellers and photo archives to create sell-out shows as well as organising our own concerts with special guest artists including a former BBC Young Musician finalist and a former BBC Choirgirl Of The Year.

We are regularly asked to sing at weddings and corporate events.

In 2014 we devised our Family Concerts to engage with younger audience members by encouraging them to join us on-stage to make music. At one of these concerts we managed to create an orchestra which performed Mozart’s Variations on Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and at our most recent family concert we performed Peter And The Wolf.

In 2015 talented bass player Aiden Smith joined musical director and keyboard player Richard Syner for a series of outdoor gigs and in 2016 drummer Brian Luke joined us to further augment the Tamarisk sound.

Any money we make goes to charity. For the past couple of years we have supported Jessie’s Fund, a UK based charity which provides music therapy for children in special schools, hospitals, hospices and other settings. So far we have raised over £3500 for this good cause.

Plans for 2017 include creating a video, augmenting our band further for more outdoor shows in the summer as well performing more concerts across the region.
